Surveying, Mapping, Engineering and GIS Federal Government Agencies:
The Corps of Engineers provides comprehensive engineering, management and technical support to the Department of Defense, other agencies, and to State and Local governments.
CERL conducts research to support sustainable military installations. Research is directed toward increasing the Army's ability to more efficiently construct, operate, and maintain its installations and ensure environmental quality and safety at a reduced life-cycle cost. "The
U.S. Army
Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) is one of
the most diverse engineering and scientific research organizations in
the world. It consists of seven laboratories at four geographical sites
in Vicksburg, Miss.; Champaign, Ill.; Hanover, N.H.; and Alexandria,
Va. . ."
The
U.S. Army Geospatial Center's (AGC) mission is to coordinate,
integrate, and synchronize geospatial information requirements and
standards across the Army; to develop and field geospatial
enterprise-enabled systems and capabilities to the Army and Department
of Defense; and to provide direct geospatial support and products to
Warfighters. The
Federal
Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) is an interagency
committee that promotes the coordinated development, use, sharing, and
dissemination of geospatial data on a national basis. This nationwide
data publishing effort is known as the National
Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI).
Geodesy
is the
science of determining the size and shape of the Earth
and the location of points upon its surface. The National Geodetic
Survey (NGS) develops and maintains a national system of positioning
data needed for transportation, navigation, and communication systems;
land record systems; mapping and charting efforts; and defense
operations.
The
USGS serves the Nation by providing reliable scientific information to
describe and understand the Earth; minimize loss of life and property
from natural disasters; manage water, biological, energy, and mineral
resources; and enhance and protect our quality of life.
